Declutter coaching is a process in which a coach helps individuals identify and achieve their goals to improve and transform their home. The coach works one-on-one with the client to declutter part or all of their home during ongoing sessions.
Declutter coaches help to get your home from drowning in stacks and piles to feeling calm and peaceful, whereas a professional organizer tends to fine-tune homes that are already pretty well under control. An organizer focuses more on your space, whereas a Decluttering Coach helps you to eliminate the overwhelming stuff that is keeping your home in chaos.
I won't make you get rid of anything but I will help guide you through the decision making process. You will make all decisions regarding what stays and what goes. It is your home and your stuff and you have to be comfortable with any and all decisions.
I have definitely read and watched the books, TV shows, documentaries, podcasts and YouTube videos of popular leaders in the decluttering and organizing world, such as Maria Kondo, Dawn the Minimal Mom, Cassandra Aarssen (Cass the ClutterBug), Dana K. White (A Slob Comes Clean), The Minimalists, Peter Walsh, and more. I have researched and studied their methods and I have synthetized all the best methods and techniques to provide my clients with a tailored approach to fit their needs and personality. However, if there is someone specific whole method you feel suits you best, we can work together using their process. There is no one size fits all for decluttering. The only that matters is that we are making progress with each session.
Unfortunately, I cannot be everywhere and with virtual sessions I can reach and help more clients in different locations. However, even if you are in my locale, there are three reasons I prefer this method. First, many people with messy or extremely messy houses don't feel comfortable with anyone coming over and this stops them from seeking assistance. Second, if I come and just start donating / throwing out stuff that I think is unimportant or garbage, what if I get rid of something that is important to you. Or if I move something to a spot that is more difficult for your daily life. This way you are incomplete control. Third and most important of all, by doing this yourself with my guidance and coaching every step of the way, you are developing your own declutter muscles (so to speak) and learning the skill of decluttering in a visceral way that will be ingrained in your muscle memory and you will hear my voice in your head during those times when you are decluttering in the future when I am not there. This is an important aspect of our process so that you can do a bit of work on your home in between our sessions as well. It's like hiring a personal trainer twice a week but then going for a jog everyday on your own.
No, absolutely not, but you may find that you want to live a more minimalist lifestyle than you have been or you may revel in maximalism but want it to be manageable and under control. The goal is a home you love that you can easily maintain and keep tidy without too much effort. This is completely up to you and you may find that it changes with time. During different seasons of our lives we can handle more in our home than during other times.
